Summer memoirs

This summer, just for a few days, I visited the coast at Onomichi (in Hiroshima Pref.). The old city center fronts the Inland Sea.
I also visited some tiny islands nearby.

In the deep blue ocean —
Ancient sea route

………………………. The evening beach —
………………………. Only birds drop by
………………………. The sand castle

After a heavy storm —
The puddle reflects
A seagull shadow

………………………. Sea fog covers
………………………. An empty beach house —
………………………. The end of summer

  1. Yes, like Norman, I find that ‘end of summer’ one hauntingly beautiful; full of what I understand to be ‘sabi’.

  2. The time of year when the birds reclaim their territory from the pesky humans! As we enter winter, the cold will drive the people even further inland, but the birds will remain, resilient and determined, presiding over the beautiful islands.

The hazy light and shade of the photos further evokes the sabi in the poems.

  3. Hi Mayumi, I enjoyed this piece. My thoughts about the 2 photos are similar to what Richard said. I also feel they enhance the experiences presented in the 4 poems.

Wonderful music in “Sea fog covers”. This poem, and “Island after island”, stir my imagination about the past and the present.

  4. Dear Norman,Tito,Richard, and Gerald,

Thank you for the nice comments! I’m pleased to hear from all of you.
